Jim Murez is running for city council member for L.A. City Council District 11. In 2021, he ran for president of the Venice Neighborhood Council (VNC). He is also the founder and manager of the Venice Farmers Market.
The following three email letters were written before the VNC election in June 2021. These letters represent the testimonies of three women who had endured inappropriate behavior from Jim Murez at the Venice Farmers’ Market. Two of them stated they had previously brought up this issue but to no acknowledgement or remedy. They even reached out to Jim Murez’ running mates in his “Common Sense” slate only to continue to be ignored.
This alleged harassment and misogyny does not come as a surprise for many of us in the Venice community who have known about his disturbing behaviour. These women are courageous and have gone on a limb to let their stories be told.
If we’ve learned anything over the past several years, it’s that these instances are far too frequent, standing up and speaking out is never easy, and women who do come forward are more often than not telling the truth. We cannot and must not drop the ball when it comes to dismantling systemic and pervasive sexual harassment and misconduct. Especially when it comes to “leaders” like Jim Murez who’ve we’ve all heard of, or witnessed problematic issues from ourselves.
Venice can do better. We need to.
