Beachhead Recommendations on the Propositions

0

Prop. 1 – High Speed Rail Bonds – Yes

Bonds are the worst way to finance anything, but a bullet train network in California will never get built overwise.

Prop. 2 – Standards for Confining Farm Animals – Yes

This is an animal rights measure.

Prop. 3 – Children’s Hospital Bond Act – No

This is a cynical measure that is not needed. There is still money left from a similar 2004 proposition.

Prop. 4 – Waiting Period and Parental Notification Before Termination of Minor’s Pregnancy – No

This is an attack on abortion rights and will harm teenagers in a disfunctional family.

Prop. 5 – Nonviolent Drug Offenses. Sentencing. Parole and Rehabilitation.  – Yes

This will reduce prison overcrowding by treating drug users who never should have been sent to prison in the first place.

Prop. 6 – Police and Law Enforcement Funding. Criminal Penalties and Laws. – No

This would divert needed social service funds to the police. Schools, the poor and disabled would suffer.

Prop. 7 – Renewable Energy Generation – Yes

This is a tough call with different environment interests battling it out. A yes vote will get us to clean energy faster than will a no vote.

Prop. 8 – Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry – No, No, No

A no-brainer for anyone who cares about equal rights.

Prop. 9 – Criminal Justice System. Victims’ Rights. Parole. – No

This would insert the victim into the administration of justice. That’s the job of the judge and jury.

Prop. 10 – Alternative Fuel Vehicles and Renewable Energy – No

A bond measure that would saddle taxpayers with $10 billion in debt. Now is not the time.

Prop. 11 – Redistricting. – Yes

Finally a good solution to redistricting which draws on a voter pool, like jury duty, except you have to apply for it. A good step toward spreading democracy.

Prop. 12 – Veterans’ Bonds – Yes

Another tough call. The bonds would be paid for by those who use the benefits. Only problem is that these benefits should be the right of everyone.º
